NEWARK, N.J. - Whitney Houston has been remembered at the church where she began singing as a child.
The congregation of New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J., was asked to pray for the family of the 48-year-old singer, who was found dead Saturday in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton in California.
At the Newark church, a couple of sympathy cards were tied to a fence post. "To the greatest songstress ever," one said, and tied next to it was a small bouquet of fresh flowers.
The Rev. Al Sharpton remembered Houston while preaching Sunday morning at the Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
He reminded the congregation that "she was born and bred in the bosom of the black church."
