Its great to be finally working back in Maryland! I grew up just outside of Ocean City, but my grandfather always lived in the Inner Harbor so I've spent quite a bit of time in Baltimore through the years.
My career in broadcasting has taken me many places across the country, but one thing that has remained the same is that I always like hearing from you the viewer.
These days television has become even more of a “two way” street and I want to hear what you have to say, show your photos and videos on-air, and especially, read your storm reports! After all, you are truly my “eyes and ears” on the ground!
One place you can easily contact me (and get some extra forecast insights) is at my Facebook “Like” page. But you can also message me on Twitter anytime @ABC2Weather or email me at weverhart@wmar.com. And for you storm buffs, be sure to check our Weather Blog at ABC2News.com where I like to blog about particularly “weird weather” and all things Maryland several times a week.
When I'm not putting a forecast together or tracking the next storm bearing down on the Chesapeake, I enjoy speaking to various organizations and schools all over the Mid-Atlantic.
In fact, I'm also a professional member of the National Speakers Association, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like me to come do a presentation for your group!
Weatherwise one interesting stop in early my weather career was in Tornado Alley at KCEN-TV in central Texas. I certainly saw some "Texas-sized" severe weather during my time there, but the most dangerous storms I've ever covered were actually at WTVA-TV and WCBI-TV in Mississippi.
This region is so known for its large and powerful tornadoes that it has earned a dubious title of its own; “Dixie Alley" - and working there certainly gave me a new respect of the power of Mother Nature.
After several years in the heat of south it was time for a major shift in climate, so it was on to WJBK-TV in Detroit. As you can imagine, in Michigan the focus of the forecast shifts dramatically to the fierce snowstorms the Great Lakes are so famous for, (though I have to admit the biggest snowstorms I’ve ever forecasted were in Maryland during the triple “Snowpocalypse” blizzards of 2009-2010).
Still, it was in Detroit that I was honored to receive several broadcast awards, including an Emmy.
Before entering the world of television, I served as a navigator in the United States Coast Guard – earning the Humanitarian Service Medal and Special Operations Ribbon for missions off the coasts of Haiti and Cuba.
At one point I even spent some time on duty at the Curtis Bay shipyards in Baltimore.
After the military I attended Salisbury University, earning my Bachelor's Degree in Geography / Atmospheric Science. I went on to earn my Master of Science degree in Geosciences at Mississippi State University, and was awarded the American Meteorological Society’s "Seal of Approval" less than a year after graduating.
Outside of work, I enjoy hitting the gym, paddle boarding, boating, and even a little skydiving on occasion!
