Last Update: 8/22 9:34 am
Hurricane Bill may be hundreds of miles away from Ocean City, but the high winds and waves generated by the storm are forcing some people out of the water.

10 year old Katie Johnson is among those refusing to go in the water.

She ws pulled under by a rip current Friday, and her mother says the incident has left her daughter afraid.

The youngster says she was riding her boogie board when a giant wave pulled her under and sent her tumbling.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol is warning tourists to take extra precautions in the water.

Similar warnings are being issued all along the East Coast and communities from Florida to New England prepare for the first major hurricane of the season.
