Statement from Alex Malone at Taco Bell Corp.

Last Update: 5/19/2008 6:01 pm

"Taco Bell goes to great lengths to provide our customers with complete and truthful nutritional information, and we absolutely stand by the accuracy of our figures as published in our nutritional brochures and on our web site.  Taco Bell voluntarily follows leading industry standards, including the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) guidelines. We use only ISO 17025 certified laboratories that specialize in testing food for nutritional analysis.  And we insist our laboratories follow AOAC approved methodology that specifies the number of samples to be tested.

Taco Bell is proud to offer our customers the choice of nine Fresco Menu items each with less than nine grams of fat.  It’s important to us that consumers know the correct and accurate nutritional information of our Fresco Menu which is as follows:

• Fresco Crunchy Taco – 8 grams of fat – 150 calories
• Fresco BURRITO SUPREME® – Chicken – 8 grams of fat – 330 calories
• Fresco BURRITO SUPREME® – Steak – 8 grams of fat  – 330 calories
• Fresco Bean Burrito – 7 grams of fat – 330 calories
• Fresco Fiesta Burrito – Chicken – 8 grams of fat – 330 calories
• Fresco Soft Taco – 7 grams of fat – 180 calories
• Fresco Zesty Chicken BORDER BOWL® – 8 grams of fat – 350 calories
• Fresco Grilled Steak Soft Taco – 4.5 grams of fat – 160 calories
• Fresco Ranchero Chicken Soft Taco – 4 grams of fat – 170 calories

While Nutrition Labeling and Education Act guidelines allow for a 20% variance in nutritional figures, there could be many reasons why ABC’s test results vary so much from the truthful and representative nutritional information we provide. Unfortunately, KNXV has chosen not to provide us with important information we would need to determine how you arrived at your numbers.  We’re also disappointed that KNXV chose not to accept our offer to visit our headquarters and meet our quality assurance scientists and registered dietician to learn in-depth about our world-class testing protocols.

To accurately determine representative nutritional information of one of our Fresco products, a careful and unbiased scientist would have tested multiple samples of that product from multiple locations, not simply one product from one location. Your viewers should take this into account and recognize that the calorie and fat gram counts you associate with us are in no way representative of our excellent and delicious Fresco products."

Sincerely,

Alex Malone
Director of Quality Assurance
Taco Bell Corp.
