Horse racing fans had an exciting morning at Pimlico. They watched three Preakness horses on the track for a warm-up.
The spotlight is on Kentucky Derby winner “Mine That Bird.” He galloped for two miles, and his trainer, “Chip” Woolley, says he’s looking good after making the trip to Baltimore yesterday.
Also, out on the track was “General Quarters.” He was involved in a minor crash yesterday, but he and his entourage are doing okay.
“Big Drama” was warming up three days ahead of the Preakness to morning, as well.
“Mine That Bird” was the unlikely winner at the Kentucky Derby. His trainer has a cool attitude, saying whatever happens next is gravy.
“It still was a little overwhelming and hard to get your head around, but now it’s started to relax and you realize you have the Derby and you get to keep that and whatever happens next is going to be gravy,” said Woolley.
We are playing witness to history this year. Never before has a jockey that won the Derby switched horses for the Preakness.
Calvin Borell, who won with “Mine That Bird” at the Derby, will ride the filly, Rachel Alexandra, on Saturday; she’s expected to arrive in Baltimore later today.
The field will be set at noon today, followed by the draw at 5. The alibi breakfast is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
