President-Elect Barack Obama's First Steps

Barack Obama is getting a taste of what it's like to be president by attending top security briefings and filling offices at the White House.  Today, he'll work on ways to fix this struggling economy.

President-elect Obama will be discussing your wallet.  Exit polls from Tuesday's election show the economy is the top issue for Americans, so Obama will make it his first order of business.  This morning, he will meet with his transition economic advisory board.  This afternoon, he will hold his first news conference, where he may announce more appointments.  Yesterday, he picked Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel to be his chief of staff.  Some republicans fear that Emanuel will set a partisan tone.  But Obama says the former Clinton White House strategist is an expert in Washington politics and someone who knows how to get things done.

Also likely to follow Obama to Washington is his closest associates:  top Campaign Strategist David Axelrod, as his national advisor.  And Communications Director Robert Gibbs as the likely press secretary.

On Monday, Obama and his wife are set to visit the White House to meet with President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.  They’re both going to take a tour of their new digs.

We're also waiting to see the dog the Obamas pick to take to the White House.  The president-elect promised his two daughters they could have a pooch at the end of his campaign.  Obama is also being called up to Major League Baseball.  Nationals' manager Manny Acta wants him to throw out the first pitch at the team's home opener on April 13th.
