One of the biggest issues facing Maryland voters next week is slots. On Monday, Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith was joined by state and county leaders to throw their support behind the referendum. They gathered on the steps of the old courthouse in Towson. Smith says money raised by slots will benefit schools, but if voters turn down the referendum, he will have no choice but to cut spending.
Smith says, "There is going to be more cuts and education may be one of those things that's cut. If it's not education, it's going to be cuts into other services." But not everyone sees it the same way. One man showed up with a sign warning voters not to approve slots, saying the social ills associated with gambling far outweigh the benefits.
