Medevac helicopters are a life saving tool. They fly to trauma centers all over the state everyday. On thursday, Legislators will question state medical officials about the overall efficiency of the Medevac Fleet.
Last week a new report came out questioning the safety and performance of Maryland's fleet. Almost half of patients flown by helicopter to trauma centers are released within 24 hours. State lawmakers wonder whether the state's Medevac system is overused.
The report also found that the fleet is safe, but there are administrative issues that need to be addressed. It found that fewer than eight of the command's 12 helicopters were available because of maintenance problems.
Also auditors could not verify State Police claims that about 95 percent of flights bring patients to the hospital within the "Golden Hour." It's a crucial time frame for emergency medical care.
The hearing will be held in Annapolis on Thursday.
