Prosecutors are rejecting claims by lawyers for Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon that they abused the grand jury process.
Maryland State Prosecutor Robert Rohrbaugh has filed a response to a motion that seeks information about subpoenas issued after the mayor was indicted in January.
Dixon's lawyers claim Rohrbaugh improperly issued subpoenas to gather evidence for trial. But Rohrbaugh says the subpoenas were issued to gather evidence for a new indictment against the mayor. Prosecutors obtained that new indictment last month.
Rohrbaugh also says the defense has no need to see subpoenas that did not produce any testimony or evidence.
Dixon, a Democrat, is accused of stealing gift cards intended for needy families and lying about gifts from her developer boyfriend. She could be thrown out of office if convicted.
