Friday night at
The Haven Lounge and the crowd is back. “We can have a double celebration bringing life back into the haven and then having the suspects arrested," says Valerie Frailing.
Word of Friday morning’s arrests into Ken Harris' murder is welcome news for owner Keith Covington, who witnessed the attack. He and the haven hadn't been the same since, with an 85% drop in business. “His eyes were hollow-looking, I mean he lost a friend but he also was loosing a business that he cared about and loved," she explains. Owner Keith Covington says, “It gives us all a collective sigh of relief and it gives us all an opportunity to rebuild our lives. Reclaim our lives I guess I should say."
But some Morgan State University students say more needs to be done to clean up Northwood. “There’s so much crime that these two arrests is not going to make us safe,” says sophomore Tara Rose. Malik Mosley with the
Loch Raven Improvement Association agrees; it's what Ken Harris would have wanted. “Now we can put our focus on what he worked for so it does not go unaccomplished," he says.
So while everyone knows there's still more work to do, they celebrate Friday night at the Haven for the work that has been done. Community leaders want new businesses to come to the Northwood plaza and they still want to split up the Northeast district in an effort to improve police response.
