That time of the month can be uncomfortable for a lot of women. But for some, It's downright debilitating. But there is a procedure that's taking the pain away and giving women a fresh start.
Rovenia Mack’s menstrual cycles was always irregular. When she did get her period, it was heavy, excruciatingly painful, and it lasted a long time. She always had to carry around an extra change of clothes. It affected her every day life. Rovenia was depressed and she didn't go out a lot.
At one point she even lost her job. She says, "It felt like something was balled up inside of my stomach, just constant pain. It was a heaviness in my uterus. It was very painful." She knew she had to something about it.
Rovenia got help from her gynecologist, Dr. Rahki Gupta at the Center for Women's Health at Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Gupta performed a procedure called endometrial ablation, it's an alternative to getting a hysterectomy. Dr. Gupta says, "Endometrial ablation is a procedure that is actually an outpatient technique to burn the lining of the uterus that's called the endometrium and in doing so reduce the amount of menstrual bleeding a woman has."
It's a life-changing procedure that's giving women a new outlook on life. Dr. Gupta says, "I hear it all the time. Stories of women who tell me they have to try very hard to protect themselves while they're at work. They have mishaps happen all the time because of heavy bleeding."
For Rovenia, it's changed her life in so many positive ways. Rovenia says, "I enjoy going out. I spend more time with my son at different activities. I'm just enjoying life."
