Reported by: Kelly Swoope
Last Update: 6/05 10:45 am
The Bubonic plague is known to have wiped out hundreds of thousands of people in the 14th century.

Now, health experts say the same plague has killed a child in the
U-S. The New Mexico health department says an eight-year-old boy died from complications caused by bubonic plague.

Officials say they did find clear evidence of rodent burrows not far from the child's house samples have been sent to the C-D-C for testing.

So there are some precautions you can take, don't let children play around any rodent burrows or pick up sick or dead rodents.
Also, make sure you use flea products on your pets.

Health officials say these precautions can make a lot of difference.
Officials say the boy's 10-year older sister is recovering at a hospital and is expected to survive.
