"I knew the signs and I knew the statistics but it happened anyway."
Sharon Voith spent years educating the community about breast cancer.....last December...it was her turn.
"I literally went 10 days from my mammogram to the bilateral mastectomy. I wanted them off. I wanted to be done, and I didn't want to worry about cancer coming back in either breast."
"Any problems since the last time I saw you?"
Dr. Young Lee.....Harbor Hospital Oncology Division Chief is Sharon's physician.
"The earlier the cancer is diagnosed the better and easier the treatment and much more curable."
Dr. Lee says mammograms and self breast exams can save lives, and minimize your treatment.
"Many cases that are detected through mammograms, almost half of them are in the pre-cancerous stage before it has actually invaded normal breast tissue so these are almost 99% curable. With surgery man people will not even need chemotherapy."
"I lost my hair. This is my wig. Everyone thinks it looks better than my real hair."
Sharon underwent four rounds of chemotherapy....and today she's almost as good as new. Her message is simple.
"If one of your loved ones needs their mammogram, if they won't do it for themselves, let them do it for you, or their grandchild."
Sharon knows a missed mammogram could have cost her....her life....now she looks forward to being around to watch her grandchild Kendall grow up. Kendall.
"I just look forward. I feel that they got it. I consider myself a survivor from the day of my surgery."
