Bicycle riders across the region and the nation took to the streets on Friday for National Bike to Work Day. The Baltimore Metropolitan Council sponsored the event.
This is all in an effort to support Clean Commute Month. It's a time to make sure we have clean air.
People were encouraged to ride bikes to work as an alternative form of transportation. It reduces car emissions from fossil fuels and improves the quality of the air we breathe.
"About a third of the pollutants that create our problems here come from motor vehicles so it makes sense that if we can get more people out of automobiles, especially single occupancy, then vehicles would go a long way in cleaning our air and making it healthy for everybody," said Russ Ulrich with the Baltimore Metropolitan Council.
"This is special because its a group activity. It's a little community action and you get to see other people who are out there biking to work. A lot of times its lonely when you are out there on the road in traffic and its a fun thing to do," said Linda Latrobe, a bicycle rider.
The Bike to Work rallies took place in Towson, Baltimore City, Westminster, Annapolis, Bel Air and Columbia.
