e-cigarettes

I recently read an article about e-cigarettes.  I had never heard of such a thing before.  Here’s the deal – they don’t have tobacco, but they are shaped and look like a cigarette.  An e-cigarette is operated by a battery that gives smokers vaporized hits of nicotine.  Some say like the patch, or nicotine-laced gum, it is a way to quit smoking.  Unlike the patch or the gum, there is little regulation or research.

I did a quick search and almost all e-cigarettes are made in China.  To me, that should be a red flag.  I am not saying we don’t get great products from China, however I have done countless stories on lead toys made in China.  Plus let’s not forget melamine-laced dog food or the tainted baby formula that killed infants – also made in China.
E-cigarettes are often found in malls - sold in flavors including chocolate and strawberry… so I can’t help but wonder if they are enticing to children.

I don’t dispute that smokers need help quitting, but I have to wonder if that’s the best way. I have never known (and couldn’t find) anyone who has used them.  I just think there needs to be more research on them – that’s all.
