Maryland SPCA

Last week when the Mega Millions jackpot was more than 300 million, I said if I win – in addition to opening a yoga studio, buying a new house, and hooking my family up with some cash, I would make a monster of donation to the Maryland SPCA and give their director, Aileen Gabey a fat raise.  I didn’t win.  All I can do this morning is sing their praises.  The organization and the people behind it are incredible.  They know how it’s done.  They take dogs and cats in from other shelters and find them good homes, they take care of their volunteers,  offer educational and community programs, and of course animal adoption.

I am sure the people who work and volunteer there see the best and worst of people.  I can think of few jobs that would be more heartbreaking.  Every Friday shelter director, Aileen Gabey comes in with a dog or cat that is up for adoption.  She is always smiling, despite the fact that it’s 5:00 am.  I admire her dedication, kindness, and passion.  Today she brought a puppy named Finnigan in.  Along with the pet, Aileen also has advice -- today it was an inexpensive way to keep your dog entertained (if you’re interested it was putting treats inside an empty, plastic coffee canister.  It keeps the dog entertained and challenged).  Aileen is great, but the truth is everyone I have met at the Maryland SPCA is.

They have wonderful community events happening all the time.  They are always looking for donations, and of course they have dogs and cats that need a place to call home. Check out their website sometime at www.mdspca.org
