I had a little debate last night with my sister. I guess debate isn’t the right word because I am unsure where I stand on this issue. It was about the flu shot. I have never had one. This year I am going to get one – but I’m not so sure about the H1N1 vaccine. That’s where my bossy, older sister came in. She insisted that if one is available to me, I must get it. I went through my whole song and dance… I rarely get sick, vaccines (particularly ones that are rushed) make me nervous, I’m not around sick people, I'm healthy, etc. She wasn’t buying it one bit. She works in health care so she ought to know, but the reporter in me is always skeptical.
We had a doctor on our 9:00 am show recently who said there are nine vaccines adults should be getting. She had a list of nasty things no one ever wants to get – shingles, meningitis, all that fun stuff. She was convincing and had me close to sold. I came around a bit and decided I will start with the annual flu shot.
I do believe you have to trust your doctor. You should always ask a lot of questions and be your own advocate. I have done a ton of reading on the H1N1 vaccine. I guess I’ll see what my doctor has to say. Maybe. Thoughts? Will you get the vaccine if it’s available to you?
