The date has sparked a lot of interest in the number 9. My purpose on this post is not to discuss numerology, but to share a little math trick.
This morning, I mentioned on Good Morning Maryland how to multiply by the number 9 on your fingers. Since Jamie and Megan looked at me with a blank stare, I have enlisted them to help me demonstrate.
Hold your hands out in front of you, with your palms facing away. Now, pick a number (between 0 and 10) to multiply by nine. Count that number fro your left pinky over to the right. When you land on the finger matching your number, fold it down. The fingers to the left represent the first digit, and the numbers to the right represent the second digit.
The images in the slide show help to demonstrate this. Thanks to volunteers Megan Pringle and Jamie Costello.
