Just a week after launching its “One Plus One” service, limiting residents to one can of garbage and one recycling bin per week, low commodity prices for recyclables are forcing some centers across the country to dump the cans, bottles and paper into landfills.
The city sends its recyclables to Waste Management’s Recycle America center in Elkridge.
"We have long term contracts with all our suppliers, and we've moved all our material,” said Center Manager Bob McCrann, “even through the time when it was hard to move.”
Last year, the city made $300,000 from its recyclable material, while this year, it appears it won’t make any money.
The city does avoid paying $33 per ton to incinerate the materials.
