You've paid up to four dollars a gallon and more. Tonight, experts say gas prices will drop as low as three dollars a gallon this fall. That's the lowest level since Spring. Why now? ABC2 News’ Cheryl Conner talked to drivers about the possible savings.
This Lutherville gas station is one of the lowest prices we spotted. The price went from $3.34 during the day Sunday to $3.25 in the evening. The downward trend may continue.
"I wish it would go down less than three dollars, less," said driver Phillip Chenowith.
AAA Mid-Atlantic predicts the average price of gas nationwide could drop to $3 a gallon this fall, thanks to the drop in crude oil, along with demand going down.
"Who would have thought $3 would sound good, but at this point that would be great, great relief," said Jon Bisset, Hunt Valley.
Here's how that relief plays out: If you're paying $3.50 a gallon today and the price goes to $3, you would save $7.50 for just one tank.
"We have gotten to the point where we see $3 as a good price for gas when less than a year ago we were looking at gas prices at $1.79, $2. 15," said Betty Clark, Baltimore.
According to AAA, the Baltimore average was $2.67 a year ago. A gas station owner in Lutherville says his distributor also predicts a continued savings.
"They have the shortage of supply now. They say once the supply gets straightened out they expect the price to drop back down," said Adrien Hughes, Oceanic Gas Station.
Of course, many drivers have changed their habits with the high gas prices by carpooling and taking just one trip to run errands. The drivers we talked to say even if the price drops to $3 a gallon, they won’t change those behaviors.
