Right from the beginning you’ll be on the edge of your seat.
As Shepard, your story cleverly starts in a decrepit hospital for odd experiments.
While looking for a way out you come across your younger brother, Toby, who is extremely creepy and should probably just be left behind. Yes, its that scary. Even though Konami employs the oldest scare tactics in the book, you’ll be lucky if you don’t jump.
In Toby’s process of being a brat, you’re forced to find one of his toys to coax him to come with you. While searching you come upon this message:
“The doctors say that I’m unable to discern fantasy from reality...but I think I know what's going on around here. I saw those demons murder the other patients. I want to escape from this cursed place but I don't dare venture into the light.
It seems that they're attracted to light. That's why people who need light to see are their natural prey. They also react strongly to sound.
If u want to go on living, you'd be better off just sitting in the dark and staying quiet. But even that probably won't save you.”
So this is how its going to be? GREAT! Luckily the controls are fantastic in avoiding the monsters (or whatever they are) attacks. Not only that, you have full control of the camera angle so as not to miss any detail of the room.
The tiniest of details were well thought out in this game. Making the main character a soldier and giving him an army flashlight so Shepard can keep his hands free is appreciated even if it is a simple idea. Where as if we were playing an ordinary person you wouldn’t be able to use your flashlight when using a two-handed weapon like a shovel. And an army flashlight is not a common item to have. Plus being a soldier at least gives a reason why he has fighting abilities, plus firearm training. I know this sounds completely ridiculous to you, but I just appreciate how much went into the story line which carries over into game play. And this is just what you see in the beginning.
Without giving anything away, this is by far one of the scariest games I’ve ever played. Definitely easier to get into than a sci-fi-horror. I give it a 4 out of 5.
