Review: Section 8 Is Not Your Normal FPS

Last Update: 9/14 4:43 pm
The campaign I am not too happy about. It can be finished in an afternoon, but you can then fight bots on maps to gain control of one or several bases. The storyline isn’t particularly interesting and your just given objectives which feels more like an introduction to different weapons and loadouts. The end of the last mission was very disappointing too. Instead of being put against a larger force with a better arsenal, your enemies are just harder to kill. For no reason in particular your last mission becomes nearly impossible by means of your enemies armor.

Testing your loadouts can be time consuming. A loadout consists of two weapons, two slots for a variety of tools or explosives, and 10 boosts to assign to enhancements(Passive Modules).  The best way to learn about them initially is to play through the campaign. Then when you're ready to play instant action and online, create yourself several custom loadouts. Start off with your favorite weapons with different extremes of Passive Modules to see what helps your type of game play. For example – try all Armor Plating and Anvil Rounds. Its something you want to have laid out before you play if you’re going to contribute to your teams progress.

The game allows you to purchase vehicles and deployables for your positive performance. If you’re on the roof of a building sniping, Anti-Air Turrets are nice to have around as a warning system that enemies are burning in around you. While this is the Sensor Arrays job, some enemy loadouts may have stealth enabled, but your AA Turrets will detect them every time. Unfortunately the tank is extremely hard to drive and then you have to switch spots to man different gun locations.

I was disappointed in the weapons. While there is nothing wrong with the options, all the weapons seem to inflict the same amount of damage.  It feels more like a matter of what weapon will help you the most at what distance. For example, when you are shooting the average enemy(they each have their own loadout), a sniper rifle is powerful, but you must wait about 2-3 seconds before firing again. If you hit every time, it takes the same amount of time as if you were shooting at mid-range with an assault rifle.

The online experience so far has been sad. For a game that requires cooperation, no one talks. This is no reflection on the game itself, just what I've been experiencing so far. Tracking your stats is fantastic. You can watch your progress and see what weapon you are most successful with. You must compete in some online games in order for your stats to show up.

Overall, the game is fun to play, but the game could use some tweaking.

I give this game a 3 out of 5.
