TAMPA, FL -- The holiday travel season is here and people everywhere are searching for a good price on that trip home to see the family.

Senior Editor Gabe Saglie with Travelzoo says there are some simple things that anyone can do to save money.

First, avoid traveling home on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Saglie says that’s when flights and airports are crowded and when travelers will see a peak in ticket prices.

Saglie says if people wait until the following Tuesday or Wednesday they could save up to 50 percent on the cost of their return ticket.

Second, Saglie suggests that travelers consider alternate airports. He says some families will save money by flying into a smaller, regional airport and then driving to their final destinations.

Saglie says people should not be fooled by a dramatically low ticket price. Fliers should remember that airlines will be tacking on all types of fees including holiday surcharges and extra bag fees.

Travelzoo says one more value to look for this holiday season is in big cities and coastal destinations.

Resorts in those locations are cutting rates, hoping to convince people to stay at home and enjoy their accommodations during the holiday season.
