Radio Ad offers $2,000 in Free Groceries

Last Update: 10/08/2009 2:41 pm

If you listen to the radio during these tough times, you may be hearing lots of ads for credit counseling and financial help.

But one ad in particular is getting a lot of attention: An ad offering free groceries for taking part in a research study.

Radio Ad gets Attention

Jackie Weaver was tuning through the car radio .....when she heard an ad offering one to two thousand dollars in grocery coupons.

Jackie tells me "I heard the ad, advertising $2,000 in coupons for shopping."

So she called the number she heard on the radio, and learned if she participated in what sounded like a "Nielsen Research" survey she'd get $1,000 in groceries plus additional discounts.

She was thrilled... until the rep asked for her credit or debit card. Jackie says "he was adamant...about giving my debit card number."

The man told Jackie it was just $3 for shipping. But she says when she pressed, she learned there would be annual charges later on. She said "after a year, theres a fee. Why is there a fee if its free?"

Jackie said no, and hung up.

What if She had said "Yes?"

So we had one of our Newsroom Producers sign up instead for the same deal. She gave a credit card number.

What did she receive?

  • A "US Patriot Card" for store discounts.
  • A "Liberty Fun Pass" for theme park and activity discounts.
  • And $1,000 in coupons from a company called GrocerySavers.com.
