Consumer Investigation

Last Update: 3/06/2007 4:33 pm
Will and Earlynn Harris spend a lot of time on their deck. They've also spent a lot of time trying to fix it. After a small repair turned into a big headache. "It’s bad business and it's not right, and I hope they haven't done it to other people." Two years after this deck was built, Will Harris says a plank came loose. Harris says repair work should’ve been covered in the deck's 20 year warranty, but that the company "Home Remedies" in Reisterstown, never answered his calls. "Overtime the secretary would say the managers weren't there and she would take a message and someone would call us back, no body called us back. We called the company at least twenty times" After months of failed attempts, Earlynn Harris told the company she wanted a deck appraisal instead. That got someone to the house. "I told him look this is the situation, you guys put a deck on my home, I had a contract that said if anything went wrong with the deck you would come fix it. We've been calling you for a year now and I want my deck fixed" Will says the man agreed to fix the deck, but was never heard from again. Harris isn't the only one unhappy with "home remedies'" services. The company has an unsatisfactory record with the Greater Maryland Better Business Bureau. "Not only do they fail to respond to the consumer, but they also fail every effort we make. Total disregard" Before you get home improvements, make sure the company's licensed with the Maryland home improvement commission and check them out with the BBB. "Make sure they have no complaints, get reliability report, give us a call and make an inquiry." In the end, Harris got someone else to do the job. Paying an additional 165 dollars for work he says should have been covered by his original contract. We too, tried to call Home Remedies. But just like will Harris and the BBB, they didn't return any of our messages. We did go to Reistertown to see if we could talk to Home Remedies, but they weren't in the office. What we did find: another angry customer, who says home remedies still hasn’t finished his contracting job, either. Denise Dory, ABC 2 News.
