Race for the Cure Special

Mother Nature was not on their side.

"If you're true to a cause it doesn't matter what the weather is - you walk, or you run," said walker Darcel Thomas.

Bundled up and ready to go 3.1 miles through Hunt Valley. Everyone has a story.

"We walked for our friend Erin who's 29 who recently got diagnosed with breast cancer," said walker Ashley Hencken.

"We walked for our sister, Tee. Sister, in honor of Tee, Tee," reads the shirt Donna Soper wore.

The number of participants is down slightly, according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. But donations are up by about 10 percent over last year. Seventy-five percent of the money raised stays in Maryland to fund breast cancer programs.

"I feel like it makes a big difference and we all should make a difference whatever charity we're committed to," said walker Keira Flemke.

For this 5k race, the competition is kept to a minimum.

"I work with three people who have just recently been diagnosed within the last two years with breast cancer, so I was walking to help them out," said Lana Davidson.

"I have quite a few friends that are survivors of breast cancer and some that didn't make it, but I'm here for a cause so whatever it takes," said Thomas.

Whatever it takes as more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer in both men and women will be diagnosed this year.
