New Job Requirement: Be Popular in Social Media

Last Update: 7/21/2009 2:44 pm
CHICAGO (AP) -- After building an online buzz about a new marketing position, Best Buy Co. Inc. is reworking a job posting that sought Twitter experience and put a number on it -- 250 followers.

After the initial description for the new position of senior manager of emerging media marketing was published, the world's largest consumer electronics chain watched as the Web reacted, prompting scores of tweets, re-tweets and blog posts.

After seeing the reaction, Best Buy pulled the job listing and sought suggestions for the job description online.

Among the suggestions: Require applicants to explain why they're suited for the job -- in a Twitter-style format of 140 characters or less.

Best Buy plans to repost the job in several weeks.
