Developers introduce video games that create compassion, not violence

While some video games have a bad rap for desensitizing people to violence, other games are getting noticed for just the opposite.

Some games actually help players explore their emotions and feel compassion for others. The game "That Dragon, Cancer" for example requires the user to help a father cope with his son's cancer, and another is about a woman struggling in a developing country.

The gaming industry is now massive clocking in a $60 billion worldwide. These empathy games are slowly becoming a sliver of the pie.

However, developers are taking creative and financial risks moving away from popular fighting, shooting and sport games, in favor of promotion play that explores deeper issues. The ability to make decisions for characters is what makes the emotional experiences of these games appealing to some. 

The games are available on a range of platforms from gaming systems to online games. Some are free, others cost up to about $60.
