Facebook releases most shared articles of 2011

Facebook is not only a way for people to connect with friends and family, but also a way to share news and the social network site is taking a deeper look at what people were talking about this past year.

Facebook released the nation's top 40 most shared articles of 2011 with stories ranging from laughable videos to tragic news that shook the world.

The top shared article on Facebook in 2011 was a New York Times article featuring aerial photos of Japan after March's devastating tsunami. The Times compared the photos of damage to Japan's normal landscape side-by-side. (Mobile users, go to http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/13/world/asia/satellite-photos-japan-before-and-after-tsunami.html .)

The second most shared story on Facebook was only posted online in September, but CNN's "What teachers really want to tell parents" made it on lots of Facebook profiles. (Mobile users, go http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/06/living/teachers-want-to-tell-parents/index.html .)

Zodiac signs made big news in 2011 and it translated on Facebook, too. " No, your zodiac sign hasn't changed " from CNN addressed many panicked Americans' concern that their sign had changed. The story came in at the third most shared article on Facebook. (Mobile users, go to http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/13/no-your-zodiac-sign-hasnt-changed/ .)

" Parents, don't dress your girls like tramps ."  With a title like that, it's no surprise it came in as the No. 4 most shared story on Facebook in 2011. The story, which appeared on CNN in April, was an opinion piece about the trend of scantily clad girls. (Mobile users, go to http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/04/19/granderson.children.dress/index.html .)

While many people share wedding plans and photos online, one wedding made it big on Facebook in 2011 -- and it didn't involve Prince William.  The most shared video on Facebook in 2011 was this Father-Daughter Dance Medley at a wedding, coming in at the No. 5 most shared article on the site. (Mobile users, go to http://screen.yahoo.com/father-daughter-dance-medley-27138015.html#crsl=%252Ffather-daughter-dance-medley-27138015.html .)
