App Review: The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth

With new movies, come new apps. Unfortunately for ‘The Hobbit', that's not exactly the case.  The free game by Kabam – ‘The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth' is actually the same game known as Kingdoms of Camelot, that used to be on Facebook, but now is labeled ‘Under Maintenance'. The app, Kingdoms of Camelot, is available for download for Apple products.

It's literally the same game, but with a Tolkien theme on it. If you are not familiar with the game, you can choose whether to build a dwarven or elven kingdom. From there, it's a matter of waiting as your buildings are constructed. The higher level / more complex the building the longer the wait. The first week you are considered a new player and cannot be attacked by other players. So of course you're going to want to level up as fast as possible. Having resources is key, so having your farm, arboretum, quarry and ore vein maxed out will get you the most by the hour. The level of your keep decides how many of these resource builders you can have.

Resources is just the beginning of the complex branching out, creating other buildings, shops, crafting items and honing abilities will exhaust them quickly.

The games are still tied to Facebook though. If you want to build your alliance you're going to either need to invite friends or join a guild.

So what's the catch if this is free to play? The amount of time things require. You can speed things up by buying Mithril with real money and the Mithril is traded for items to give you leverage in different areas.

The game is amusing and does have a level of fun to it, but overall its just a level grinder. I would recommend it to serious Tolkien fans, but otherwise other people may not find it as much fun.
