The St. Mary's County Sheriff's office is warning people of an IRS tax scam.

The scammers claim to be from the IRS and tell victims they owe taxes and must pay using a pre-paid debit card, money order or wire transfer. They then threaten with criminal charges or arrest.

The sheriff's office says if you receive a call like this, you should immediately hang up.

The IRS generally first contacts people by mail – not by phone – about unpaid taxes and the IRS will not ask for payment using a prepaid debit card, a money order or a wire transfer. The IRS will also not ask for a credit card number or your bank information over the phone.
