Kidde NightHawk is recalling about 3.6 million smoke and carbon monoxide combination alarms.

The company said the alarms can fail to chirp after its seven-year end of life if the batteries are replaced, causing consumers to falsely believe the alarm is still working.

The default may lead to customers not receiving a fire or carbon monoxide alert in their home. Alarms made between June 1, 2004 and December 31, 2010 with model number KN-COSM-IB are included in the recall.

Eight incidents have been reported, but no one has been injured.

Anne Arundel County Fire officials are urging owners of the recalled alarms to get a free or discounted replacement.
