Is buying in bulk really worth it?

With supermarket prices rising again in 2016, we're all interested in ways to slash that $150 or $200 dollar weekly grocery bill.

So is this the year to finally join a warehouse store? And if so....which one is best?

Shoppers love Sam's Club and Costco, and other stores that sell big items cheap. And buying staples like paper towels or tide detergent in bulk can save hundreds of dollars a year.

But the march issue of Kiplingers Personal Finance says there are number of things where you may not save any money!

Among them, large cans of vegetables or tuna: small cans in supermarkets are often on sale, and cheaper in those cases.

Cereal: Kiplinger says the sale price at supermarkets is almost always less per ounce.

Vegetable oil: It's shelf life is just 6 months, so you need to fry a lot of food to make a gallon worth it.

And sunscreen: it loses effectiveness after a year, so if you don't use it all....you should not save it for next year.

Meanwhile, the membership at Sam's Club is $45 a year.

So does it pay off? For a small shopping trip, you'll probably do just as well at Walmart

But if you buy a lot of groceries every week, sam's will save.

Finally, if you can't decide which warehouse club to join, ask which one is more convenient.

If you prefer Costco for its more upscale products, but it's 20 minutes further away than Sam's Club.....Sam's may be your better choice.
