Customers who purchased front-loading washing machines made by Whirlpool could be entitled to compensation in a class-action settlement.
A settlement was reached in several class-action lawsuits against Whirlpool Corp. and Sears, Roebuck and Co. over select front-loading washing machines manufactured between 2001 and 2010. The lawsuits claim the machines failed to self-clean, resulting in the buildup of bacteria and mold which caused bad odors and damaged clothes.
Affected brands include Maytag, Kenmore and Whirlpool.
While the Whirlpool and Sears deny any defects or wrongdoing, attorneys said the companies breached warranties and violated state consumer protection statutes.
Customers included in the settlement could receive $50 cash, a rebate of either 20% or 5% off the purchase of a new machine or dryer, or up to $500 in reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses on repairs or replacements. Customers may receive one of these benefits for each washing machine purchased.
Claims must be submitted by October 11, 2016.
